How it began: John Thomas
Sometime around the year 1978, Russell Mitchell, a friend of mine, convinced me to go to a Spiritualist Church service with him. Our son, Jesse, was about two years old, and he went along. At the end of the service, a lady came up to me, and explained that she was clairvoyant and that a spiritual entity who was my guide had come up to her. She said he was a tall American Indian wearing a long chief’s feathered headdress. He appeared to her with his arms folded across his chest saying, “He won’t listen to me. He just won’t listen”. His name is White Buffalo, she said. I took in the information and wondered about it. I did recall that as a young boy, I was very interested in the American Indians, always requesting books about them. And I had a child’s daydream that there would be an Indian uprising, and they would capture me and raise me as an Indian. So, an American Indian spiritual guide seemed plausible. But I didn’t know what to make of it, and gave it no more thought for a long time.
Then, several years later in 1990 a friend of mine and Russell’s recommended that Mary and I get a Life Reading done by a local Detroit man who seemed to be as good as Edgar Casey was at these intuitive readings. During this session the man’s wife, herself a clairvoyant person, told us that several spiritual entities had appeared. She described one of them as an American Indian in a long headdress. We asked the entranced reader about these entities and their purpose for being there. He said, “…ye find those whom ye identify as upon that of the Angelic realm…Ye look unto such as being that of the guardians and to that of …higher self.” The one was “…as that of the red skin. Even unto the identity thereof of that of the buffalo.” He further explained that he was, “…as that of guardian or as of such of guide into that of time that … (I) would exist within that of the flesh and this one would be in that of spirit…would follow and would assist.”
In an email on October 7, 2008 I had explained this to our son’s fiancé Lia, a Duke PhD student, because she had dreamt a dream of an earlier era where she seemed to be in a life situation with Mary and I. Lia had posed this question to me, “…That's really powerful to have a chief spirit with a large headdress. Have you ever meditated on what he may be guiding you to contribute to the world? I doubt so powerful a guide has small intentions. I wonder what they are!!” I took this question to heart, and decided to try and find out through non-dominant-hand writing. This method had worked in communicating with White Buffalo around 1991.
I had recently retired from the University on North Carolina, and was looking for guidance into the most effective and beneficial use of my time and energies. I decided to see what I might find out from my spirit guide.
The following is the non-dominant-hand writing communication on the morning of October 8, 2008: 1 What is my purpose, now?
J: White Buffalo, do you know my purpose or mission in this life, this time on earth? What am I to do, pursue or accomplish now?
WB: As always, we are Love, like our Father; yet within form there is much you can do to express and extend Love. You are to do that wherever you go and wherever you find yourself and with whomever you find yourself, extend our Father’s true love which is our own. Know his Love is extended to you and can never be lost or wasted and overcomes all seeming challenges in the world of forms as in spirit.
J: Thank you, I have generally felt this, and mostly tried to do so most of my life, haven’t I? But is there a more specific purpose or activity or mission I should be engaged in for the rest of my time in this form?
WB: You are always looking for specifics which are just more forms. There is no greater purpose than what I have just described, no other purpose exists. Love is. Love is what the Father is and what He “does” as you might say it. Love is what you are. Love is what you are to see and what you are to be in each moment, for it is what you and all you experience are.
J: I think I realize that, I’m just somewhat “foggy” at times as to how to do it. And then, my “human reactions” also get in the way. How can I improve to where I am expressing and extending Love here each moment?
WB: Know that your every need is met. Know that you are loved and cared for by your loving Father. Once you are care free, you have no worries to concern you and to stand in the way between you and your brothers. You know the Father’s Love is sufficient for your AND your brother’s happiness. It is yours to experience and extend Joy, which is of the Father and is what you are.
J: But, White Buffalo, what about the Trail of Tears, the injustices done to our people by the white brothers? If I see or experience such things, am I to just stand around smiling, “joyfully” loving the oppressor and the oppressed?
WB: In your worlds of “form” you will always find such dilemmas if you look for them. Seeking and making such is the game you are playing in that realm. Is it not true that the white man, and the red, as well as the black, the yellow, the man, and the woman all seem to be born, to suffer in some way and to die? The seeming relative degree of suffering is not the issue, all are one in reality. The “end” of the oppressor and the oppressed is the same. While in the form of the body each has agreed to their role. You play your roles for each other’s benefit out of love. Ultimately, by this wandering around (or in spite of it) you remember that Love is the Way, that you are all one and that what you give to an “other” you give to your “self”, what you do to others you do unto yourself. It is your task to demonstrate this now through your living and being by being joyful because you know the Father’s Love is sufficient for all needs and desires of His creation which He dearly loves.
J: O.K. Thank you White Buffalo. But I don’t know if I’m ready or “developed” enough at this point to realize and extend joy in every moment and love in every encounter.
WB: You are and always were by virtue of your true nature, your essential Being, which is Love. You only need to let go of, release, the role you’ve grabbed on to in form. Release yourself and all you encounter from your definition of what you think they are. Those are just judgments that interfere with the flow of Love, the flow of Joy. This would be your “work” if you insist on seeing it as such, to perfect your ability to and the ease with which you are able to release those you encounter and the world you see around you from what you think of them and simply extend Love and Joy.
After this communication with White Buffalo, I went jogging on the UNC forest trails, as I do many days. There, it occurred to me that the summary title of what I may contribute to the world could be called: torch-bearer lighting the way out through the darkness.
… Release yourself and all you encounter from your definition of what you think they are. Those are just judgments that interfere with the flow of Love, the flow of Joy. This would be your “work” if you insist on seeing it as such: To perfect your ability to and the ease with which you are able to release those you encounter and the world you see around you from what you think of them and simply extend Love and Joy.
I decided to continue this non-dominant-handwriting communication as and when it seemed right to do so.
The following is the non-dominant-hand writing communication on the afternoon of October 14, 2008: 3 What ‘should’ I be doing in life?
J: White Buffalo, I want to ask—or rather want to know—what ‘should’ or what will be my next focused endeavor in life, the next activity on which I should spend the majority of my waking hours. But, I’m not sure that I should even be asking the question, or that I should be seeking guidance from or through you. Can you help on these issues?
WB: With regard to your frustration with not knowing what tomorrow will bring, how your day will be spent, or what you should be engaged in, I can tell you little more than what you already know. You know of many of your talents, abilities, and gifts. And you know of your higher self and of your oneness with all that is. You are learning to release complaining and grievance and accept what you bring into your life moment upon moment. As you continue upon this path of learning and experience, looking to Great Spirit and His expressions of higher beings, which are all one with your higher self, you cannot but be led upon that which you seek. A while back, I recall that you concluded that all of your goals and objectives you were writing down in your practice of future-projecting could all be summarized as your desire for peace, freedom, and joy. Your recognition of this truth was wise indeed. And now as you learn that freedom, joy and peace are wholly gifts you have from our Father, the Prime Creator, you are learning more and more how to accept them each moment and thus share and expand these gifts in the world you have chosen to participate in. This activity the world needs and you need.
J: Yes, but I still feel lost much of the time—alone and ‘floundering’ about. What of that?
WB: You already know you have discovered and embarked upon a path of great meaning. You are but to stay the course. As you learn the ways upon this new path you will learn to more easily recognize the path and the twists and turns and decision points will become easily negotiated. You already know to choose for love—to choose in favor of freedom for yourself and your brother and your sister in most cases. And you are learning forgiveness and to not value the thing that is temporary over that which is eternal. You rarely complain any more and you are learning to lay most of the cares you imagine at the “feet” of the Master, your guide and guides to truth through the darkness. You are choosing the light and inviting it in to illuminate all the dark areas and hidden corners more and more often. As you allow more and more the light of truth to illuminate your being, your path becomes better illuminated and more recognizable. You gladly walk along it in peace with your brother. Others follow knowing you have found your way and will not falter in the light. For you have learned the way of clarity and of a mind certain of its purpose and its identity, its meaning and its Source.
J: Wow! Thank you, White Buffalo. I think this answers both my questions. Thanks!
The following is the non-dominant-hand writing communication on the morning of November 4, 2008: 6 Relinquishing attachment to “Ozzie and Harriet”.
J: White Buffalo, as you probably know, I’ve been wanting to communicate with you directly again for a few days now and never got or took the time until now. But yesterday’s occurrences with the plumbing issues and yesterday’s spiritual lesson I was working on, as well as last night’s sleepless period following (and during) our electrical power outage has motivated me to seek your words now.
WB: You are always welcome to seek our guidance in any form you choose and find beneficial. I have acknowledged your more frequent pleas or requests for input or guidance through the non-verbal, non-written forms of late. All methods of contact with us—your higher self—are beneficial, for we are all one, together with the most High, our Creator. There only appear to be a separation or difference in rank, power, ability or level in the minds which seem to be apart, journeying “away from” or “back toward” your Home. Each conscious contact with your appointed guidance brings your journey onto a truer course. And as you know, from the first time you were made aware of my presence in your journey here and now, I had desired—for your sake and benefit—a greater communication with you. So, I am well pleased.
J; Well, I’m happy to know you are available to me and to believe that you are an aspect of the Holy Spirit, which I understand at this point to be a part of the Son, or Holy Creation, of God. But it seems that the truer course or corrected path I’m currently on is by no means easier, nor involves fewer struggles or more peace yet, at this point. I often see the truth presented in the lessons I am learning and generally do believe I’m onto a corrected path and vision of life. Yet the challenges still often seem great. Sometimes life’s problems begin to appear insurmountable. I don’t know where this is all leading for the remainder of my time in human form. And I tend to worry, suffer and struggle a lot, still. I’d like to get to the peace, joy and freedom benefits soon, my Brother.
WB: You will and are “getting there”. You have released many of your distractions which formerly consumed your focus. Yet, you have many attachments yet to release. With each attachment to form you release, you untie a knot which binds you to your illusions of struggle and suffering. You undo another tangle holding you in fear. You are unlearning incorrect lessons you on earth have taught yourselves and now teach each other. Your entire beliefs are bound up in time and space, matter and motion, give and take, you and me, them and us. The truth of the wholeness is lost to you until you stop and listen to the voice of truth which is always calling to you, always singing the song of love to you through the deepest part of yourself which knows it is still connected to Life. This Love is always there and our role as guide is to reach you as often as you allow with this message of Love from our Source. The more attachments to temporal things, and especially beliefs, you release, the more knots you untie; your freedom grows, peace increases, and joy actually becomes apparent—as if the sun were breaking through the clouds.
J: So, it appears that I am, or still have been, too attached to house structures and their operating systems (plumbing, HVAC, roofs, etc.), to vehicles as means of getting around and traveling in comfort and style, to finances through familiar means of jobs, or retirement saving, pension, Social Security and so forth. Is that what you are saying? Yet all those seem to be necessary ingredients to a sound, happy life on earth.
WB: Your so called ‘sound, happy life on earth’ is a misnomer. It’s a pretty picture you on earth produce to try and perpetuate a path that only leads to nowhere real—and temporarily seems to lead to death with various myriad episodes of alternate joys and sufferings along the way with suffering generally dominating throughout the duration and death ultimately being the inevitable end result in all cases except a very few obscure, seldom believed reports of a few special humans escaping this common end to human life. This untrue hope of obtaining the beautiful life through attachments to the things you have mentioned or even to the concept behind them only serves to paint over the window through which you must see—the window through which the light of truth must be allowed to shine and illuminate your path, your mind and your Being. Continue letting the paint fade from the glass and even rubbing and scraping this glass clear. And you will find the light beyond. And the light coming in will illuminate the door that you may find you way out of a darkened dwelling into the light where dwellings are not needed and shelters are meaningless.
J: I want to White Buffalo. I want to be free, at peace and joyful. I feel I’m on the path. I hope you’ll help me get there—get beyond my fears and doubts and tumult.
WB: All the help you need is available to you, promised to you, is being given to you, and is yours. You can believe this, my Brother. Carry on with your progress of letting the light in so that you can see by cleaning the glass. Do so by releasing attachments to your picture of what a good life is or means. For that picture is not even Life at all—only “paint on glass”. Do so, also, by continuing to release your judgments about experience as it occur to you. Release your thoughts that crop up about yourself, others and what ‘happens to you’ each day, and simply extend love to all your experience, letting joy come forth, and enjoying life.
J: Thank you, White Buffalo. I will do my best to do so.
The following is the non-dominant-hand writing communication on the morning of November 12, 2008: 7 I would know the truth.
J: White Buffalo, I would know the truth and believe it—denying all else.
WB: My Brother, I am glad to hear you express this thought for it is the path to the ending of your journey through turmoil, doubts and pain. As you have heard and are beginning to accept, the truth does indeed make you free. And your real freedom promotes and supports your joy in every moment and in each circumstance. As you reach out to truth and accept it as your reality, you will find it easily replaces the illusions your senses report—those of lack and doubt, pain and death. Accept no lies such as these throughout your day. And the Light of truth—the Father’s love and provision for you will be apparent.
J: OK. Thank you, White Buffalo.
Some reservations about an American Indian Guide and his name:
Along about this time, I began to wonder if all of this was spiritually correct: to be communicating in this way, with this purported Sprit Guide. We’d been studying A Course in Miracles for a while, and I wondered: Should I be communicating with White Buffalo, or with the Holy Spirit directly, or what? Were they possibly the same thing, given our Oneness?
According to the channeled information about this one… “of the red skin…even unto the identity thereof of that of the buffalo” and the others non-physical entities that appeared then, they were all Guides, Guardians, of the Higher Self, and of the Angelic realm. According to the Course, the Holy Spirit is of that part of our (higher) Self that remembers God. So, I came to believe that since Holy Spirit is our Guide back to our true Self, then White Buffalo is an aspect of that, working directly with my past-to-current concept of what I am.
I had been praying to Father God, Brother Christ, and Holy Spirit Guide, I guess to cover all bases, but also realizing that they are all one, with no separateness. And as I awaken more and more, becoming aligned with the truth of my unity with the One Self, All That Is, I figured my Guide was part of the Wholeness, was legitimate, and could be addressed as Holy-Spirit Guide, or Holy Spirit-Guide, Higher Self or White Buffalo.
I was comfortable with continuing, and as I asked for guidance while thinking, praying, or writing I sought the relative guidance from God in general, most frequently thought of as Holy Spirit. And in non-dominant-hand writing communication, I no longer felt the need to address White Buffalo by “name” necessarily, but felt comfortable that the process and the results were of God, helpful in my spiritual development, and perhaps helpful for others as well.
Thus, I continued on, sometimes without using the name White Buffalo or any name at all, just Q: and A:, sometimes J: and H. S.: for Holy Spirit or Higher Self, or G: for Guide or Guidance.
The morning of December 03, 2008: 10 Worry
J: Why do I worry so much?
G: Worry is a form of fear. You worry because you are afraid. You are afraid because you believe you have done something wrong. In fact you believe you have done many things wrong and deserve to be punished and to suffer. So you worry about how that punishment and suffering might befall you. In your own attack thoughts, you like to spring upon the “enemy” unaware and so you must expect that such surprise demise could befall you, thus you must be very watchful, expecting suffering could spring upon you at any time. This is your worry.
J: How can I cease worrying and live in joy?
G: You must release your erroneous belief in a life separate from and at odds with God and the world around you. Instead of seeing and feeling other beings and things around you as unfriendly and in competition with you for the very essence or essentials of your life, know that your life essence is given freely to you and also to all those around you and to all that you see and feel. Know that nothing happens to harm you or others but that all is expressing harmony. What you choose to see and believe may not reflect reality. It may reflect illusion.
J: That doesn’t seem all that helpful. I guess I don’t know how to live in this world without living by its rules or operating systems. Yet I want to escape the agony associated with that.
G: You long to increase your peace, joy and freedom. And I tell you that you cannot accomplish such for yourself alone. You must accomplish this for your fellow beings and you entire world, for such you are. You are not the individual among the masses, or in the town, or on the job that you currently think you are. You are inseparably entwined within all of that, such that you are the masses, the town, the neighborhood, the workforce you see around you and that you experience and feel.
J: I know I’ve been told that I’m “God” of my life and experience and expression. I just don’t seem to fathom what that means or who that “me” is. Sometimes I seem to get glimpses of it—and feel better, inspired, at those times—but that fades eventually.
G: Your inspiration is coming through more frequently and more consistently as you turn to me for guidance. You are turning to and opening to your Father God, Brother Christ and Holy Spirit Guide for comfort, guidance and inspiration more and more often and more consistently. There is much learning that you have taught yourself yet to undo. And that is happening at the rate you believe you are able to tolerate. You still cherish some of your pain, which is a surrogate joy to you in your ignorance you have chosen. But the availability of true, pure joy is dawning upon your awareness, and you are recognizing it as being available to you—your gift given to you—and you are approaching it to accept it as yours. You are making room for God’s gifts to you by cleaning the Altar of you mind that He may approach and lay the gifts before you..
J: That seems backwards, God coming to me with gifts to place upon my altar.
G: It is backwards. In your mind, you have strayed so far, that this would be necessary. But such is the magnitude of His Love for His Creation. In the seeming undoing of illusion—the impossible dream that never happened in eternity—such seems to be the case in your mind. Backwards appears the way home.
Afternoon of April 1, 2009: 20 Who are you?
J: White Buffalo, I address you today. I’ve danced around this question in my mind and have some thoughts about it. The question is about your identity—who you are. Are you Holy Spirit, or of Holy Spirit?
WB: I am what you believe me to be to you. All is One and all that really is, is God. Holy Spirit is God and yet was created by God for you to serve the Oneness and the Sons of God, which appear to be many in form, but are always One.
J: That doesn’t clear much, if anything, up for me. Perhaps I cannot grasp this with my finite mind.
WB: That is why you need a Guide in this seeming life you believe you are living, which as we have said many, many times is only a dream of your very powerful, creative mind. Your wisest course and the only beneficial one is to relinquish what you would call control—which to you is your conscious thought and decision process—to your Higher Self, your Guide in the world you dream up, your Guidance—that which you often call “the” Holy Spirit. But recall you have learned through repeated instruction and lessons not to look outside your Self, for there is nothing there, because all is One—there is no smarter, wiser, separate Guide other than you to lead you on in truth.
J: That makes it sound like it is all up to me—the wandering, lost sheep—to keep myself safe, restore myself and lead others away from danger and death. How can that work?
WB: That works because you are not the lost, suffering, bleating lamb you would like to believe you are. That is only an image of dependency you have created in one or more phases of your dreams. We can only relate to one another on the terms you are able and willing to accept. So, you often see God or His Christ Aspect as a comforting Shepherd. And you may “see” me through your image’s energies, or those energies and perceptions shared with ‘others’, as an Indian Chief you once shared a “previous life” (a dream phase) with. This you were ready, able and willing to accept. Likewise, these non-dominant-hand writing ‘communications’ became useful to you.
J: And do you think they would be useful to others as well, given our connectedness?
WB: You, I, We can only carry truth, the Light, within us. There are many symbols, reflections and images that may be useful in a world of time and space. But your internal experience is of the utmost importance to the world, for that is what generates your world you are freeing yourself from—this dream you are beginning to awaken from.
J: OK, thank you, White Buffalo. I think this will be most helpful.

“…Helpers are given you in many forms,… Beyond each one there is a Thought of God,… But they have names which differ for a time, for time needs symbols,… Their names are legion,… God does not help because He knows no need. But He creates all Helpers of His Son, while he believes his fantasies are true. Thank God for them for they will lead you home…
Morning of July 8, 2009: 23 Awaking

J: Dear Guides, thank you for being with me at all times whether I’m aware or unaware of your presence, guidance, help, love and encouragement to return to peace, joy and freedom.
G: You are welcome; it is our pleasure and our own fulfillment to do so. We are pleased with your increasing desire to become more and more aware of reality and truth. We understand your struggles which arise from your errant beliefs and misguided faith. And we are here to assist as you decide for correction of error and acceptance of truth.
J: Thank you for those encouraging words. As you are probably aware, last evening I was asked to accept an opportunity to share these messages, and any other gems of revelation I’ve been blessed with, with a group of fellow seekers at a monthly Janis Foundation educational meeting. You know my discomfort with (fear of) public speaking which is offset by my desire to share. I ask your guidance in preparing for and presenting to this group—that it be the most beneficial for all that is possible.
G: We are indeed aware and will help you with what to say and what to do. You have been guided to this point and your work of extending love and joy, which is our Father’s Will and desire for His Creation, continues and expands even within this dream you are having as you dream more and more of awaking.
J: Awaking certainly does seem to be my biggest dilemma currently. I seem to be afraid or reluctant, to let go of the dream, for it has been the only seeming reality I’ve been aware of. And I don’t know what abstract existences as the Idea of God would be, or is, like. But I do know that this dream has—and does—result in unrest and despair, along with the ultimate death of the body, which we tend to identify with. Human life only seems to result in fleeting episodes of peace and joy. My desire is becoming more and more focused on attaining peace, joy and freedom more consistently and upon making the choices which lead to that.
G: Indeed your dreaming, illusion-generating mind fragment that you have been investing faith and belief in has distracted you so that you could continue to pursue the errant goal and purpose which has always been impossible to achieve. But you are, always were, and always will be free to pursue anything—any idea, for only ideas exist—that you choose to pursue with your beliefs. However, not all ideas are true. And your true will is Your Father’s Will for you to create reality, not illusion, by extending Your Self which is Love. This creates eternal ever-expanding joy, peace and freedom for all. This is why your new choice to begin to awaken asks you to relinquish supposedly knowing what everything is and simply extend love and joy to all you encounter in your awareness, which is more than just the form which you perceive. Behind those perceptions are your thoughts, your ideas, which generate what you have been accepting as your reality. Extending love and joy to all of it is to shine the light of truth upon all of your experience and shadows thus disappear, leaving only what is true for you to see. This is true awaking and enlightenment.
J: Wow, Holy Ones. Thank you!

Afternoon of December 16, 2009: 28 The return of love
J: Hi, White Buffalo. It has been quite a while (in terms of time) since I’ve written you this way. I suppose I often say that. But I’m home alone, with Monkey on this beautiful peaceful afternoon and wanted to commune with you again. It always seems to be so helpful, or enlightening and useful as guidance and increased understandin. I don’t have any particular issue or problem, but I am always open to wisdom. Actually, as I wrote that, I did recall the fact that since having finished the Workbook a couple of weeks ago, I’ve been wondering if I really am any different or changed much—if any—and is my path here more correct or corrected, will I facilitate miracles, spread joy, offer salvation and so forth?
WB: Who and what you truly are as the creation of God Itself is, of course, as changeless as God Itself. Nothing has or ever can change this truth. However, what you would make of yourself has shifted indeed. This shift has occurred as you have accepted new symbols within your dreaming mind to represent the images you make in your sleep. All of your reality is intact and always will remain so in the safety and certainty of God’s Will. Your task is but to awake to this truth within the dream of “Other” and thus overcome temptation for idols by accepting truth. This ‘re-membering’ will bring back to your awareness the memory of unbounded joy that is your eternal inheritance.
J: Than you for that reminder. I guess I do realize that it is somewhat silly to evaluate how much I might, or should have, changed over the last year or so and what my miracle potential might be, or should be now. What could I possibly be evaluating but the ego and a false idea about myself and what I might change into that I would like better or respect more than the previous false image of myself I thought I was.
WB: Certainly false images do seem to abound in your ‘imag-in-ary’ world and there is no harm that can come to your or your brother from them. For there, all is meaningless—without cause and completely without effect at all. Yet you can believe you are there (which is nowhere) and feel that you are suffering and devoid of peace. But you are not. It is your task to choose to release your hold upon such beliefs and accept the truth that all is well, whole and perfect in creation and relinquish any thoughts and ideas that anything else could possibly exist.
J: Well it just doesn’t seem like I really have my mind around the idea of the whole, perfect, eternal Implicate Order, Kingdom of God truth thing yet. I get glimpses and joyous epiphanies once in a while, and then they seem to fade and I seem to settle back into the tired old image of me as a certain mortal body with a brain for a mind, and so on. Even though now I supposedly know better. How can I stop ego-thinking and be totally led by Holy Spirit?
WB: Simply by doing just that each moment, moment upon moment recognizing the fact that you do not remember what anything is for or what it truly is. Thus all you can do is accept it for what it may be in truth. And thus you do not condemn it to be the image you pronounce it should be within your dream. It's what we do
I think this means that fear is our own creation---just as the world is. We create the situation, and the fear to go with it. It's just one of the things we do.
So, if the fear is making you feel bad and you don't want to feel that way, then go inside and find the love that's in you. The love helps you get in touch with your memories of Heaven, though on a subconscious level. And that will lift you out of the fear for awhile.
And then, keep in mind that life is a continual experience. That's what it really is. It isn't a school or learning game, as such. It's an experience. We created it, because we wanted that experience. If you understand that, then you enjoy it much more.

WHO WE ARE
A good friend of mine was upset recently, because things weren't working out in her life like she wanted. She couldn't get what she wanted. Instead, she kept getting what she didn't want. She said the world was all messed up and dragging her down.
Here's what I told her:
I truly believe that everything is unfolding as it should. It took me a long, long time to get to this point, though. And saying something like that to someone who doesn't understand it, is like punching them in the stomach.
It reminds me of a verse in the Tao Te Ching talking about how people react when hearing about the Tao. It says some are moved instantly, others study it with great reward, some respect it, and then it says this---"Some, upon hearing the Tao, laugh. If they did not laugh, it would not be the Tao."
Everything, even what we don't like or don't understand, is in perfect order. It has to be for anything to be.
I believe we are moved through the world by who we are. The things and experiences that come to us, do it because that's what's drawn to who we are. If they didn't happen, we wouldn't be who we are.
No accidents.

Kellie Love and A Course in Miracles
I have spent the last 33 years of my life involved with a program of Spiritual Development known as “A Course in Miracles”. Over time, it has had a beneficial and transforming effect on everything I do. Not that I claim to have attained any high state of Spiritual Enlightenment, but all my humble activities have profited from my own re-orientation to a higher purpose.
“ACIM” as it is sometimes called is often mistaken for a “new-age religion”. It certainly is not. It is more properly considered a self-study program for Spiritual growth. “Religion” – literally means to “bind together”. It applies to teachings applied to a group of people to bring them into conformity with a specific dogma or belief. It is to “instruct the faithful in the truth”.
ACIM is a personal endeavor to ascertain the truth of one’s own being through conscientious examination of one’s own mind, beliefs, convictions, etc. There is little attempt to inculcate a particular rubric or doctrinal belief system among the students. There are clear distinctions made in ACIM. For instance, “there is NO sin”, “you are and have always been a perfect child of a loving God”, the entire world you see – particularly its stresses and pain – is illusory”, and “Jesus is no different from you – in truth you are both forms of God”.
Even though ACIM is a uniquely personal endeavor, it is often studied in loosely organized groups meeting in homes, churches, or other convenient locations. Some churches are less authoritarian than others and are thus, frequently the site of ACIM study groups.
The study of Miracles is probably more like a psychologically-based personal growth group than anything else. There are no “right” answers, no non-negotiable demands. No emphasis on being “saved”, not even an acknowledgement of the existence of “sin”. The whole thrust of the teaching is to recover a sense of the original wonder of being a wholly perfect creation of a loving Creator. For most humans, this is only a far-away dream, but this is the ACIM student’s Holy Grail. To fully appreciate the UN-fallen state of God’s perfect child, we learn that our seeming shortcomings are but mistakes in our clouded self-perception. Yes, I am aware of just how radical this view is.
Typically the meetings commence with a period of quiet meditation, followed by an opportunity to gossip, chat and share experiences. Frequently passages from the 3 volume work A Course in Miracles will be read aloud with comments invited from those present. Students frequently report examples from their recent daily life and draw comparisons or evaluations. The leader merely facilitates, sometimes clarifying, mostly just listening as those present grope for their own understanding of the book and their own life. There are no sermons, creeds, homilies or didactic recitations. After a time, usually one and a half to two hours, the group will again grow quiet, meditate for 5 to 10 minutes and then disband. Sometimes refreshments will be provided by a member.
The intensely personal nature of these discussions tends to build close friendships and alliances among the students. There is typically a sense of “family” and belonging that develops. Especially in the earlier days of “The Course”, there was a certain air of conspiratorial collegiality that was often noticed, due to its radical departures from conventional dogmas. Many present day students experience a great relief from the contradictions and pressures of conventional religions.
It has been a great 33 years. I have experienced many epiphanies and adventures along the way. I have finally abandoned the hope of ever “getting there” and have learned to settle for the increasingly joyous trip along the path! It is wonderful to realize that above all else, with all my seeming “flaws”, my Creator loves me and I do indeed totally return that love.

QUESTION: I got this lesson this morning. Give me your scholarly opinion if you will. Thank you. I thought it a bit perplexing.

Study to know thyself in relationship to that ye choose as thy ideal. And let that ideal be set in Him, who is the way, the truth and the light. This does not mean becoming good-goody, no--far from it! Be able to look everyman in the face and tell him to go to hell--but live as He did, the lowly Nazarene!

ANSWER FROM KEMP WARD: My feeling is that this passage is telling us to simply be who we are. And, it's saying to listen to our inner guidance and follow it. Unless we follow our inner guidance, we really can't be who we truly are.
And, it's telling us to give up judgement---of others AND ourselves. Do and say whatever we feel like, BUT do it without judgement. That way, you can have whatever interaction with others that you want to have, without anger or any other negative emotion. You aren't judging. When we judge or feel attack, we usually end up being a mirror of other people instead of who we really are.
Others may expect anger, but it won't be there if we refuse to judge or feel attacked.
I tell my clients over and over to negotiate hard and push for what they want, but to NEVER EVER get mad or show any signs of irritation. I've made them memorize my favorite charge to them: "The first one to get mad loses."

Sweet Dependence Day
Americans have never gotten over their successful rebellion against Great Britain. We pride ourselves on our self-reliant independence. Even our folk-heroes, Davey Crockett, Daniel Boone, etc. are the go-it-alone tough guys who can make it on their own without the help or support of others. Cooperative, mutual participation is somehow not quite American. It seems more characteristic of Asia somehow than our rugged individualist traditions.
Even in our personal relationships, we seem to value inter-dependence among equals much more than the frankly dependent parent-child or mentor-student model. We deeply believe that dependence is bad, weak, vulnerable and much to be avoided. Such attitudes may be appropriate in some settings, but we are stuck in independence. We fiercely resist surrendering our independence even in relating to our Creator – yes, to God.
We really don’t want to think about humbly kneeling before our Creator, accepting unquestioningly the guidance of a Superior Intelligence. We would much rather have a peer or “buddy” God. Someone who would be more understandable, comprehendable, of our own dimensions. Someone we could more comfortably “argue with” if He diverged too much from our own point of view.
So we resist accepting the loving guidance and support of our One True Source and Author. Somehow we would rather “do it ourself” than accept the direction of One who knows far better than we, what our real needs and possibilities are.
What balky, obstreperous children we are! We attempt to content ourselves with all sorts of limitations, problems, deficiencies, because we just don’t want to “lose control”! (As if we had it to lose!)
One of the sweetest messages I ever heard is found in Brent Haskell’s book, Journey Beyond Words. In this book, Jeshua says that the real essence of love is freedom. That God does indeed love us, and He thereby grants us total freedom to do and be as we wish. Whatever we choose is ours. The one and only limitation is that we have already been created, and we cannot change our nature. What we are, how we are made, our inner nature is fixed in our creation and try as we might, cannot be changed. And do we ever try! We pretend to be thieves, assassins, perfidious, cruel, and rotten to the core. We carry this to such extremes that we can convince most of our brothers that we really are the evil things we pretend to be! Sometimes only God can say that “this is my beloved child in whom I am well pleased”.
Could God really grant us this much freedom? Yes! He can. He does. I don’t know how he continues to love us sometimes, but He insists He does. He gathers up the broken and shattered bits of his children, the spoiled remains of an angry and vicious world and loves them back into eternity. Only God could manage it.
So he gives us total freedom. We are given the freedom to reject Him. To create a world for ourselves that is the complete opposite in almost every way to His gentle and loving nature. We have the freedom to persist in our madness, without intervention, until we weary of it and find our way back on our own.
And when we manage to return from our folly, do we have a hell of a bill to pay? What do you think? That is what the parable of the Prodigal Son is all about. We are welcomed home with great love and celebration. Our debts are cancelled, our foolishness forgiven and nothing remains but the joy of homecoming.
This return to our loving Father is the event I want to celebrate. This final recognition that yes, indeed I am dependent on my Creator. With His help it is my nature to own the Universe…even more to become the co-creator of all that is. Wow. What a better outcome than to merely celebrate being alone and independent. How about accepting my place as co-equal with the loving boss of Creation! I think I won’t insist on Independence any longer. Enough is enough.
